Santa Monica hike in Chacos — not my preferred shoe.
If you go
The Santa Monica Mountains are forgiving enough that you can get away with sandals on the smooth fire roads — less so on the rocky single track, as the footwear choice here taught me. It’s the closest trail network to the West Side, year-round, mostly free, and it’s fire country, so trails close after red-flag days.
