Goat Canyon Trestle, the hard way
We went the direct/hard route and didn’t quite make it.
The trestle
The Goat Canyon Trestle is the largest curved wooden railroad trestle in the world, built in 1932 on the abandoned San Diego & Arizona Eastern line — the so-called ‘Impossible Railroad’ that threaded Carrizo Gorge on the edge of Anza-Borrego. There are two ways to reach it: a long desert approach, or a brutal direct scramble up the gorge. We took the direct route and ran out of day. It’s a hike people routinely underestimate — no water, big heat, real exposure — so go in winter, start early, and respect the turnaround time we didn’t.
