Background

Baker and Green Lakes hang in the high country above Bishop Creek, off the trail near South Lake in the Inyo National Forest. In winter the access road turns to dirt-and-snow and you camp where you can get to — high, cold country right at the foot of the Sierra crest.

If you go

This is the Bishop Creek country in the Inyo National Forest, where roads climb from Bishop toward the South Lake and Sabrina basins. Baker and Green Lakes hang up in the high country off the Green Lake trail. In winter the road turns to dirt-and-snow and you camp where you can get to; for an overnight in the wilderness above, you need a permit. It’s high and cold — this was a January trip, and it felt like it.
