Background

San Jacinto Peak rises to 10,834 feet straight above Palm Springs, one of the most abrupt vertical rises in the country. The Marion Mountain trail is the steep, direct west-side route; the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway is the cheat that lifts you to 8,500 feet and cuts the climb way down.

If you go

San Jacinto Peak (10,834 ft) towers right above Palm Springs, and the Marion Mountain trail is the steep, direct way up from the west — it gains a lot, fast. You need a wilderness permit (free) for the state-park portion. The lazy alternative is the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, which lifts you to 8,500 ft and cuts the climb way down. We used it as training, which is the right way to treat it.
