If you go

This is Ladder Canyon in the Mecca Hills, off Painted Canyon near the Salton Sea — a slot-canyon loop with fixed wooden ladders bolted up the dryfalls. The road in is rough dirt, there’s no shade and no water, and summer is genuinely dangerous out here. The ladders shift and break after flash floods, so they’re a check-as-you-go situation. Go in the cool months and start early.
