Background

Catalina Island sits 22 miles off the LA coast, and the Trans-Catalina Trail walks its spine end to end. Two things define it: wild bison, introduced for a 1920s film and never removed, and scarce water, so you plan the route around the cache points.

If you go

This is the Trans-Catalina Trail across Catalina Island. You reserve the backcountry camps (Two Harbors, Little Harbor, Black Jack, Parsons Landing) through the Catalina Island Conservancy, take the ferry over from the mainland, and walk the island, usually wrapping up in Avalon. Two things define it: there are wild bison out there (introduced for a 1920s film and never left), and water is scarce, so you plan around the cache points. Ending with a night in Avalon before the ferry home is the right call.
