Capitol Reef & Southern Utah

So we drove in on Wednesday. And the drive was mostly straightforward. We left around five or six a.m. We had walkie talkies, which was kind of funny. We were all on different vehicles from our friends, but we had three vehicles, roughly, kind of leapfrogging throughout SoCal. We woke up at four and got out the door as soon as we could with prepping the cats and things of that nature. I feel like we left at five thirty, We got on the road. Mostly, didn’t have much traffic. I had a ton of work to catch up on. So I ended up working in the car while Lindsay drove almost the entirety of the trip.

Wednesday — Torrey

But regardless, we made it. But it was interesting and a lesson to offload maps and maybe pre look at the, route there, but we ended up getting like almost a 10, 12-hour day. We left early enough for the traffic seemed like it was going to be, you know, maybe 8 hours versus a full 10, but come to find out with stoppage, we stopped in one Utah town to drop off UPS package for my wife’s work, lots of things that kind of amounted to a longer trip to get there, but we arrived probably three, four, five-ish. Sun was getting slightly low but not too low. We found our camp spot, where we used the rooftop tent on the truck for our actual sleeping, but I ended up bringing my backpacking tent for two reasons. At the Capitol Reef, main area, just in case we needed to use our car for travel, we used the tent as a, as a base camp, we would store stuff in there, storage shed is probably a better word. We stored stuff in there to keep it dry and out of sight. But slept again on the tent, and we had the backup tent just in case for whatever reason Bryce Canyon had beef with the rooftop tent.

We stay in the official group campground and I think for all Uberfest that’s the move. We stay at the group campground and again that’s our recommendation for any of these meetups ’cause again, it’s a great place to meet people network but also just the canyon sign-ups like we’re big on like, we love meeting our f- and hanging out with their friends, we’re also big on tapping into like kind of not random groups but meeting new people, having new experiences, etcetera. So we always like being near the signup list.

There’s a Mexican restaurant across the street where you grab that to go, and we ate that while listening to orientation and just kind of reorganized, caught up with friends and prepared for the canyon the next day.

Thursday — Cassidy Arch

Thursday, we did Cassidy Arch just to knock that out and get the classic done. Had a great day.

We got to the arch and we began setting up a rappel. It was a bit funny when it was asked who wants to set up the rappel, my wife said, ‘I’ll do it.’ After no one stood up, but then everyone seemed to have an opinion afterwards, but that’s all fun and games. If you ask three climbers for an opinion you’ll get six.

Friday — Wives 3 and 5

Friday we did, Wives three and five.

We gave the other crew a walkie-talkie and subjected them to our whale tendencies. But also were able to confirm that the rope was there and they were good to go, and everyone had a fantastic time.

I was very content and happy with all the canyons that I did, including the wives. Again, all that note to say that, like I thought the wives were super cool. I’d definitely do them again.

Saturday — Nighthawk

I, again, was very content, very happy with Nighthawk. Again, I don’t think we faced any real challenges, which again, don’t need to be challenged. It was still a technical activity and thought the pothole experience in the canyon was really pretty.

Sunday — Cathedral Valley and Fish Lake

It’s definitely desert driving, definitely washboard.

We went to the farthest point of the loop and then continued heading West into the mountains.

We got our hammock and we posted up on the edge of Fish Lake and took a nap ’cause again, we had a super early morning. We didn’t have coffee yet and we didn’t have food, so we took a nap instead on a hammock on the side of the lake.

Sunday and Monday — Bryce Canyon

We got our stickers, then headed on to the North Campground where we set up our tent and took another quick nap with the intention to go out for a sunset hike and maybe some astrophotography.

We were both tired, so I think the entire thing was kind of a bonus shoot versus a well planned out event. And then also, just testing Lindsay’s patience. I feel like I get enjoyment from star photos, but again, sitting there watching me gets boring after a minute.

We did the loop. Again, crowds began to form more strongly on the exit as people were waking up and or finishing their sunrise shoot, but we did a quick loop and yeah, hopped in the car, went to the bathroom, grabbed a snack, and made our way and began our journey home.

Monday — Mammoth Cave, Duck Creek, and Cedar Breaks

Again, like the lava tubes were cool, I wouldn’t make a trip to go to it, but if you’re in the area, sure.

We met a nice couple who recommended we have to stop at Cedar Break. So we just did a quick detour to Cedar Break.

So Cedar Breaks again, we just stayed at the rim. We just had an overlook, beautiful photo, didn’t spend a ton of time.

And stopped at Del Taco later and made it, you know, got home and began the journey of unpacking and preparing for work the next day.
