Canyoneering · Capitol Reef UBERFest
Overview
Day 1 of 5 · UBERFest 2026
We opted to leave super early, which we’re big fans of ’cause we caught a really awesome sunrise and still have daylight afterwards, even though again, we forgot to use that for napping. But yeah, like early start, a little bit, like I think we were intending to leave by 7, leave the campground by 7 and, We met at the campground and left together as opposed to meeting at the actual trail start. And because we left early, we weren’t concerned at all with parking. We just parked in the main parking lot.
This was led by a Ched who was very specific about his desire to keep the group together. We opted to not leapfrog but again, do each rappel as a single unit. So we hiked, we had several breaks here and there. Again, we did the main trail up. Straightforward hike. We got to the arch and we began setting up a rappel. It was a bit funny when it was asked who wants to set up the rappel, my wife said, ‘I’ll do it.’ After no one stood up, but then everyone seemed to have an opinion afterwards, but that’s all fun and games. If you ask three climbers for an opinion you’ll get six.
I went around, was taking photos of both the arch and also was taking photos of people doing the canyon.
Several people got snacks out as we began to set up the other rappel. Again, we got everyone down from the arch before proceeding to the next. And on proceeding to the next, I believe it was that next rappel. We kind of set up a fixed line because the approach, like the final like, staging area for that next rappel was kind of on a slope. So, we did set up a fixed line. I don’t think it was necessary, but definitely an extra security measure, why not? Big group. All new people, first day of the event. And then again, somewhat straightforward, rappelled down into tighter slot canyons. We continued down the rappels. I don’t think there’s anything of note, again, I think the highlights were obviously the arch rappel. It’s always fun to set up, you know, unique things and practice such as the fixed line. Group dynamics were all positive. Everyone had a good time.
I think some more notable rappels was one was like another like natural bridge or kind of a miniature arch, which is unexpected. I think we’re all there just again for that opening scene, but we’re pleasantly surprised by a couple more of the rappels. And then a unique feature, the final rappel was kind of they had there’s cable set up and kind of like carved footing and we just attached our tethers to that and progressed to the final rappel.
We found a few pieces of trash and glass that we tried to pick up and then thankful that there’s a trash can at the end. Always try to pick up more trash.
I did find a Mylar balloon I feel like I have an 80% success rate at finding Mylar balloons.
We got home with a little bit of time to explore. I had a desire to get, maybe get some sunset photos cause I think most people are trying to get back, but honestly, we were tired from the drive. I was tired from work. I actually finished some work afterwards. And then for my real job and then I, we progressed to just kind of deal with the sign-up sheet.
