Explored Tokyo and gathered as a group. Got some incredible sushi, saw the market, picked up a lens, and was served by the world’s best bartender. Also got to attend a sumo event!
Background
Tokyo rewards chasing a few specific things on purpose — the Toyosu fish market at dawn, the secondhand-camera shops stacked with lenses around Shinjuku, and the Grand Sumo tournaments that hit the city in January, May, and September at the Ryogoku Kokugikan.
If you go
A few of those are worth chasing on purpose. The Toyosu market (the modern successor to old Tsukiji) is the early-morning sushi pilgrimage. Tokyo is one of the best places on earth to buy used camera gear — the secondhand shops around Shinjuku are stacked with lenses. And the timing on the sumo was lucky: the Grand Sumo tournaments hit Tokyo in January, May, and September at the Ryogoku Kokugikan, so a January trip lines right up. Japan travel info here.
