Another trip with Lindsay’s family, where we had a cabin at Old Faithful and drove around the park. I ventured out many times in the wee hours to capture star and geyser photos.

Yellowstone was the world’s first national park, set over a supervolcano whose heat drives the geyser basins, hot springs, and mudpots. Staying at Old Faithful puts you on those basins after the crowds leave, when steam and stars and the occasional eruption line up — and the bison and bears are a constant reminder it’s wild.
If you go
Yellowstone is the world’s first national park, and staying right at Old Faithful is the photographer’s cheat code — you’re on the geyser basins after the crowds leave, when steam, stars, and the occasional eruption line up. Book lodging far ahead, keep your distance from bison and bears (people forget they’re wild), and give yourself more drive time between sights than the map suggests.
