If you go

The Alabama Hills sit just below Mt. Whitney outside Lone Pine — the rounded movie-set boulders you’ve seen in a hundred Westerns and car commercials. It got popular enough that the BLM had to rein it in: it’s now a National Scenic Area with designated camping, a 14-day limit, and closed zones, so it’s not the free-for-all it used to be. Check the current rules before you plan to sleep there.
