Idyllwild, again

We love Idyllwild and end up there on unplanned three-day weekends for some 4×4, hiking, and — per the three-day weekend — always a parade.

Background

Idyllwild is the pine-shaded mountain town below San Jacinto, up in the San Bernardino National Forest at about 5,400 feet. It runs on its own clock — a dog for a mayor, climbers headed for Tahquitz and Suicide Rock, and a forest-road network that makes it an easy unplanned long weekend.

If you go

Idyllwild is the mountain town tucked below San Jacinto in the San Bernardino National Forest — pine trees, a famous canine mayor (Mayor Max), and a base for hiking Tahquitz and Suicide Rock, climbing, and 4×4 on the forest roads. It’s the kind of place that absorbs an unplanned long weekend, parade included.
