In 2021 California closed every national forest in the state for a stretch over fire danger, which torched a lot of mountain plans. The move when that happens is to drop to the desert and the national parks, which run on different rules — Death Valley, the Alabama Hills, Joshua Tree.

Context for the pivot: in 2021 California closed every national forest in the state for a stretch due to fire danger, which torched a lot of mountain plans. The move when that happens is to drop to the desert and the national parks, which run on different rules — so we leaned into Death Valley, the Alabama Hills, and Joshua Tree. The trade is heat, and in early September that’s a real one, so it’s a dawn-and-dusk kind of trip.
