Caught some northern lights after deciding to quickly check out the Sedona Airport overlook after pizza and wine, and sure enough, we saw the solar flare.

Background
Sedona’s red rocks and high-desert dark skies make it a night-photography town. The May 2024 aurora that reached here was a rare one — an extreme geomagnetic storm strong enough to push the northern lights as far south as Arizona, which almost never happens.
The event
This was the May 10–11, 2024 geomagnetic storm — a once-in-a-couple-decades G5 event so strong it pushed the aurora as far south as Arizona, which basically never happens. The Sedona Airport Mesa overlook is a classic sunset and dark-sky perch, and stumbling onto the aurora from there on a whim is the kind of luck you can’t plan. Visit Sedona.
