Hamilton Lake, our first solo backpack
Lindsay’s and my first solo backpack — we did a pre-permit-season run from the Middle Fork up to Hamilton Lake. A hot-to-cold trip with some pivots, and a bear.
If you go
Hamilton Lake is one of the showpiece destinations on the High Sierra Trail out of Sequoia National Park — you climb from hot, low chaparral into granite-and-snow high country in a single push, which is the ‘hot to cold’ of it. Overnights need a wilderness permit (quota season is the busy stretch) and a bear canister, which the bear sighting underlines. It’s a serious, beautiful first solo objective.
