Santa Barbara with the family

We hopped in my car and headed up the coast to explore Santa Barbara. The ladies went shopping in town; the boys went up a waterfall hike. This was the first time seeing the SB Courthouse, but not the last — such a beautiful building. I swear there’s at least one wedding-related thing happening there every time I’ve been. The hike was moderate but did get a little pick-your-own-path near the end as it continued up the dry creek.

If you go

The Santa Barbara County Courthouse is the thing people skip and shouldn’t — it’s a working courthouse, free, and you can climb the clock tower (El Mirador) for the best view in town, out over the red-tile roofs to the ocean. That’s why it’s wedding central.

The waterfall hikes above town run up the front-country canyons off Tunnel Road — Seven Falls and Inspiration Point are the usual ones, and they get exactly that boulder-hop, pick-your-line character up the creek that you hit. Go in spring when the creek’s actually running; by late summer it can be bone dry.
