Dover Castle and the white cliffs

A side quest for our London trip. We chose this out of a couple of castles and it didn’t disappoint. We walked to the white cliffs, did the tours, and could even see France’s coast shining back. We even stumbled into a local pub and were welcomed and called Yanks.

Background

Dover Castle guards the narrowest point of the English Channel, and it’s two things at once — a massive medieval fortress and the WWII secret wartime tunnels that ran the Dunkirk evacuation. From the White Cliffs above it you can see the coast of France on a clear day.

If you go

Dover Castle is a great pick because it’s two things at once: a massive medieval fortress and the WWII secret wartime tunnels that ran the Dunkirk evacuation. From there it’s a walk to the White Cliffs, where on a clear day you really can see the coast of France. It’s about an hour by train from London, so it makes an easy day trip.
