Background

Guadalupe Peak is the highest point in Texas at 8,751 feet, rising out of the Chihuahuan Desert in Guadalupe Mountains National Park. The trail is about 8.5 miles round trip with real gain, and it’s relentlessly windy up on the ridge — the park sits where the West Texas winds funnel through.

If you go

Guadalupe Peak (8,751 ft) is the highest point in Texas, in Guadalupe Mountains National Park. The trail is about 8.5 miles round trip with real elevation gain, and it is famously, relentlessly windy up on the ridge — the park sits where West Texas winds funnel through. No permit for the day hike, just the park entrance. The view down to El Capitan and out over the Chihuahuan Desert is the payoff.
