If you go
Mt. Lowe, above Altadena in the Angeles National Forest, carries a strange history: the Mt. Lowe Railway once carried tourists up here to a mountain resort, and the Echo Mountain ruins and old rail grade are still scattered along the route. The Sam Merrill trail up past Echo Mountain is the usual line. The ‘ice cream at the top’ is a nod to that lost resort era — though these days you bring your own.
