Yosemite: Vernal Fall and Glacier Point
This round of Yosemite with my dad had less snow (none) and more people. We did the Vernal Fall trail and swung around the Panorama Trail to the Glacier Point viewpoint. But with my bum knee and a fear of missing the shuttle (and those switchbacks down to the viewpoint), we actually befriended an older couple who offered us a ride into the valley. So many excellent spots for a good view — the beginnings and ends, anywhere near the parking lots and bus stops, are always insanely crowded, but a few miles will weed out the crowds.
If you go
The Mist Trail past Vernal Fall is the classic valley hike — steep granite steps, and you will get wet in spring. Linking it toward Glacier Point via the Panorama Trail is a big day with real elevation; in summer most people drive or shuttle up to Glacier Point for the view instead. Your read is the truth about this park: the crowds pool within a half mile of any parking lot or shuttle stop and thin out fast once you put in a couple of miles.
When to go: May–June for the waterfalls at full volume; September for thinner crowds and warm rock. The Glacier Point Road closes for winter.
