The high desert around Joshua Tree has become a creative-retreat staple for a reason — quiet, cheap-ish off-season rentals, dark skies at night, and the park next door when you need to get out of the house. The town of Joshua Tree and Twentynine Palms have just enough (coffee, tacos, a saloon) to keep a writing weekend fed.
