Mountain biking in Texas
Guide in progress — riding notes and Carter’s own account to follow.
Why Texas rides better than it reads
Texas has no alpine, so its mountain biking is built out of limestone ledge, creek bottom and scrub. The result is technical in a way the elevation profile never shows: short, sharp, rocky, and rideable most of the year.
The areas
- Austin and the Hill Country — the Barton Creek Greenbelt and the Hill Country parks are the centre of gravity. Limestone shelves, punchy climbs, technical lines close to town.
- Dallas–Fort Worth — Northshore on Lake Grapevine is the best-known trail network in the metroplex.
- West Texas — the desert riding near Big Bend and the Davis Mountains is remote, exposed and needs real water planning.
Season
Autumn through spring. Summer riding is early-morning only, and trails close after rain — Texas limestone and clay hold water and rut badly when ridden wet.
