A compilation of photos from around the greater LA region, mostly the Santa Monica Mountains.

The area

The Santa Monica Mountains run straight through LA out to the coast, and they’re the closest real trail network to the West Side — Topanga, Temescal, Will Rogers, the whole Backbone Trail. It’s a National Recreation Area, so access is mostly free and year-round. But it’s fire country: trails close after red-flag days and during active fire season. Early morning beats both the heat and the haze.
