Hiking out of Carlsbad Caverns

The final stop of our winter Texas road trip, into the caverns. We hiked out, which was a new experience for us and really drove home just how far down we were.

Background

Carlsbad Caverns is just over the line in New Mexico, a vast cave system under the Guadalupe escarpment. The move is the Natural Entrance route: instead of riding the elevator, you walk the switchbacks down some 750 feet into the earth, which is exactly how you feel how deep the Big Room really is.

If you go

Carlsbad Caverns is just over the line in New Mexico, and the move is the Natural Entrance route — instead of riding the elevator, you walk down the switchbacks roughly 750 feet into the earth (or, in our case, hike out and feel every foot of it). The Big Room down below is enormous. It’s timed-entry reservation now, and in summer the evening bat flight is its own event.
