Sawtooth Gap

The place
Sawtooth Pass sits at about 11,600 ft above Mineral King, in the southern reach of Sequoia National Park. It is the shortest line from a trailhead into the Great Western Divide, and it is short because it is steep: roughly 3,600 ft of gain in a little over four miles, most of it on loose decomposed granite above the last trees.
Beta
- Trailhead: Sawtooth Trailhead, Mineral King Road. The road is 25 miles of narrow switchbacks and closes seasonally.
- Permit: Sequoia and Kings Canyon wilderness permit required for overnights; quota season runs late May to late September.
- Marmots: Mineral King marmots chew vehicle wiring in spring and early summer. Wrapping the undercarriage is standard practice at this trailhead.
- Water: Monarch Lakes below the pass is the last reliable source on the climb.
