Background

Walnut Canyon, just east of Flagstaff, holds Sinagua cliff dwellings built into the limestone ledges of the canyon walls about 800 years ago. The Island Trail drops a few hundred steps down past them, so you walk through the actual rooms.

If you go

That’s Walnut Canyon National Monument, just east of Flagstaff. The Sinagua people built cliff dwellings into the limestone ledges of the canyon walls around 800 years ago, and the Island Trail descends a few hundred steps right past them — you walk through the actual rooms. It’s a quick, high-value stop on the Flagstaff–Grand Canyon drive, and the climb back out at 6,700 feet gets your attention.
