A week on the Big Island

Spent a full week on the Big Island, mixed with exploring activities with Lindsay, some solo trips, and wedding festivities. We did a circle of the island — from lava fields to lava trees to the lava NP, to disappearing sands, to manta rays, monuments, and snorkeling.

Background

The Big Island is the youngest and largest of the Hawaiian islands, still being built by Kilauea, and it stacks climate zones from rainforest to lava desert to snow on the summits. You can circle it in a week and still feel like you skimmed it — lava fields, black- and green-sand beaches, and the Kona-side manta rays at night.

If you go

The Big Island is the one you can circle in a week and still feel like you skimmed it — it stacks climate zones from rainforest to lava desert to snow on the summits. Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park is the headliner (active volcano, lava fields, glow at night when it’s erupting). The Kona-side manta ray night snorkel is the other must, and the green- and black-sand beaches are the ‘disappearing sands.’ Rent something that can handle a rough access road or two.
