A side trip to Nara
A quick little unplanned side trip. The deer are insane, and we stumbled upon a giant Buddha temple that was mind-blowing.
If you go
Nara was Japan’s first permanent capital, and Nara Park is overrun with free-roaming sika deer that will bow to you for a cracker and then absolutely mug you for the rest of the pack. The ‘giant Buddha temple’ is Todai-ji, home to one of the largest bronze Buddhas in the world inside one of the largest wooden buildings ever built. It’s an easy half-day from Kyoto or Osaka.
